There was the sound of gunfire before the phone line went down. But the head of the opposition National Transitional Council told Al Jazeera he was not hurt.

Muammar Gaddafi was captured as his hometown of Sirte was falling, a National Transitional Council commander said, adding that the ousted Libyan strongman was badly wounded. "He has been captured. Muammar Gaddafi's son and one-time heir apparent Saif al-Islam has been detained in the southern desert, Libya's interim justice minister and other officials have said. Fighters from the western mountain city of Zintan announced his capture on Saturday as gunfire and car horns marked jubilation across the country at the arrest of the British-educated 39-year-old who a year ago seemed set to follow his father as Libya's leader. Saif al-Islam and three armed companions were taken without a fight during the night, officials said. Gaddafi's son was reportedly not injured, unlike Gaddafi himself, who was killed last month after being captured by fighters in his home town of Sirte. "We have arrested Saif al-Islam Gaddafi in [the] Ubari area," Mohammed al-Alagy, Libya's acting justice minister, said. Another example is the Lockerbie bombing (21 December 1988, 270 killed): the investigators identified the owner of the suitcase containing the bomb and the timer thanks to the testimony of a Maltese shopkeeper who had sold the pair of trousers also located in the booby-trapped suitcase. "Today we can definitely say that the Gaddafi regime has come to an end," President Obama said. "The last major regime strongholds have fallen." Al Jazeera showed graphic images earlier today of what was said to be Gaddafi being dragged around by armed men in Sirte, the ruler's hometown. GlobalPost's Libya correspondent James Foley reported on an eye-witness account of Gadaffi being shot in the heart and in the chest. The death of the autocratic ruler has been welcome news for pro-democratic supporters. "This marks the end of a long and painful chapter for the people of Libya," President Obama said. Neither President Obama or White House officials confirmed the reports of Gaddafi's death but say they have full confidence in the accuracy of the claims.
