Chinese Authorities Lose Control as Village Revolts
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt As we've been telling you this week, tens of thousands of villagers are protesting in Wukan, in Guangdong Province. Now the situation has become a standoff as villagers have kicked out both local officials and police. That came after the suspicious death of one villager in police custody. Here's the latest. The over twenty-thousand residents of the village of Wukan in south China's Guangdong Province have expelled all local Communist Party authorities, including police, and blocked road access to the village. The British newspaper The Telegraph was able to get a journalist on the ground in Wukan on Tuesday. Malcom Moore called the current incident the first time on record that the Party has "lost all control" in a situation of "open revolt." This marks the latest escalation in an ongoing confrontation between villagers and local Communist Party officials they've called corrupt and abusive. For three months, Wukan residents have been staging occasional large-scale protests against a longstanding series of abuses committed by local Party officials. The villagers' biggest grievance was corrupt officials profiting from illegally selling the villagers' land. The current intensified protest, including the expelling of all police and officials, came after the death in Party custody of Xue Jinbo. He was a Wukan resident who had served as a negotiator with authorities ...

Japan's Solar City of Future
WONG: While most people in the world are considering more energy efficient means of living, Japan is one step ahead. One solar-powered city offers an energy self-sufficient community that produces its own power. Let's take a look. STORY: These dark rectangular solar panels could hold the key to a completely self-sufficient community. Ota City, located about 80 kilometers north of Tokyo, is one of Japan's sunniest spots and home to strawberry fields. Quite interestingly enough this nature hotspot is where 550 homes are given free solar panels from the government, as part of a study on how avoid blackouts by sharing solar power. Mika Hiroshima's family moved to the neighborhood three years ago to try out solar power. All of her electrical appliances are mostly powered by solar energy and when they have some unused electricity left, they can sell it to a local power company and make a profit of up to 5000 yen, or about 50 US dollars, a month. [Mika Hiroshima, House Wife]: "I had never thought I'd be receiving money instead of paying when I receive electricity bills. People had told me how good this is but I didn't believe it until I actually saw negative numbers on my electricity bills. Then I realized how wonderful this system is." Solar panel makers say that at high noon in sunny weather, a 4-kilowatt rooftop power generator can yield enough power to run four dryers at once. In cloudy weather, the power generated is less than half of that. Experts say if families buy them ...

Winners Announced for NTD's Chinese Int'l Piano Competition
New Tang Dynasty Televisions first annual Chinese International Piano Competition came to its conclusion on Sunday, as after three days of competition the last 15 finalists came down to only a handful of winners for the top awards and the two top winners were both young musicians with brilliant futures ahead of them. Nimble fingers fall upon the keys, tiny felt-covered hammers hit steel strings, and the sounds of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin thunder forth from the stage. After a long day of tough competition, there came a group performance where all 15 finalists united to celebrate their love of piano followed by the long-awaited awards ceremony. The bronze award winners were Weiwen Ma and Wei Chen, each of whom received $1000 dollars. The silver award, and $3000 dollars went to Na Lian, originally from Mainland China. She has participated in numerous competitions and attended music schools in China, Russia, and the United States. Chinese Regime "Orders" Dalai Lama to Reincarnate in Tibet
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http On Monday the Chinese regime announced that the Dali Lama must follow the traditional reincarnation method in choosing his successor. Chinese authorities banned reincarnation without state approval in 2007 but now say the latest order is for the purpose of "preserving tradition." The announcement has been met with anger from the Tibetan community. Here's more. On September 1st, 2007 the Chinese regime banned reincarnation without state approval, yet now the officially atheist regime is ordering the Dalai Lama to reincarnate in China after he dies. The Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in Northern India, is reported to be thinking of choosing the next Dalai Lama from outside of China. Yet the Chinese authorities announced on Monday that he must not break with tradition, and that the next Dalai Lama, the highest title in Tibetan Buddhism, must be chosen following the reincarnation tradition. But there is a catch—the Chinese regime says it has to approve the reincarnation of any living Buddha. In 1995, the Dalai Lama, following the reincarnation tradition, named a boy in Tibet as the next Panchen Lama, the second highest title in Tibetan Buddhism. The Chinese regime put the boy under house arrest, and installed another Panchen Lama in his place. The Tibetan Government in Exile reacted with anger at Monday's announcement. [Samdhong Rinpoche, Prime Minister of Tibetan Government in Exile]: "The ...

iPhone Smuggling in China
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me Bootlegged Apple products have been spreading like wildfire throughout China. But that doesn't mean every iPhone is a fake. Increasingly, iPhones are being smuggled in to Mainland China. And the smugglers are getting pretty creative. Apple's new iPhone 4S and its electronic helper Siri has become a serious smuggling problem in China. PRON:(Siri and Serious start with the same pronunciation) Smugglers are frequently busted trying to illegally sneak the smartphone into Mainland China. The reason -- the iPhone 4S sells for $125 dollars cheaper in Hong Kong. Smugglers try to make a quick buck buying the phone there and selling it in the Mainland. This is the Luohu District of Shenzhen, a port of entry where authorities have been battling increasingly inventive methods of smartphone smuggling. Since the beginning of the year, over 3000 phones have been seized, in a total of 231 cases. In this recent footage from February 21st, a man attempts to pass through customs with 30 iPhones tied to his waist and ankles. Customs officials noticed something was amiss when the man couldn't bend down to pick up his suitcase. About 250000 travelers pass through here everyday. Customs officials have seen some pretty clever tricks. [Wang Weixin, Luohu Customs Officials]: "Look at the shirt, six internal pockets were sewn into it with three iPhones stuffed into each, so 18 phones can ...

① Nine Commentaries on the communist party, first Commentary
The 8 next commentaries are available on this playlist me.lt On What the Communist Party Is This is the first of Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party. Foreword For over five thousand years, the Chinese people created a splendid civilization on the land nurtured by the Yellow River and Yangtze River. During this long period of time, dynasties came and went, and the Chinese culture waxed and waned. Grand and moving stories have played out on the historical stage of China. The year 1840, the year commonly considered by historians as the beginning of China's contemporary era, marked the start of China's journey from tradition to modernization. Chinese civilization experienced four major episodes of challenge and response. The first three episodes include the invasion of Beijing by the Anglo-French Allied Force in the early 1860s, the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 (also called "Jiawu War"), and the Russo-Japanese War in China's northeast in 1906. To these three episodes of challenge, China responded with the Westernization Movement, which was marked by the importation of modern goods and weapons, institutional reforms through the Hundred Days' Reform in 1898 [1] and the attempt at the end of the late Qing Dynasty to establish constitutional rule, and later, the Xinhai Revolution (or Hsinhai Revolution) [2] in 1911. At the end of the First World War, China, though it emerged victorious, was not listed among the stronger powers at that time. Many Chinese believed that the first ...

Diver Yang Yun was taking part in a free-diving competition to apply for a whale training job at Polar Land Aquarium in the city of Harbin. But when she was 15 feet down in the icy water, her right leg cramped up. These two beluga whales, a couple named Nicola and Mila who were swimming in the aquarium with Yang, sensed her distress. They moved towards her and helped her to the surface. Yang was one of seven final candidates competing for the job and had been required to dive as deep as possible without any breathing equipment.

Japanese Math Professor Excellent Optical Illusionist
For more news visit ☛english.ntdtv.com Japanese mathematics professor Kokichi Sugihara spends much of his time in a world where up is down and three dimensions are really only two. Professor Sugihara is one of the world's leading exponents of optical illusion, a mathematical art-form that he says could have application in the real world. Three sloped ramps are aligned along three of the four sides of a square. Each ramp appears to be sloped in the same direction but when a marble is placed at one end of the ramp it seems to defy gravity. It's called an "anti-gravity slide". Only when the the entire structure is turned 180 degrees, is the illusion revealed. Japanese mathematics professor Kokichi Sugihara from the Meiji Institute near Tokyo, has made a career of creating optical illusions. He's devised and built more than a hundred of them, like this one called "Perches and a Ring". [Kokichi Sugihara, Meiji University Professor] "Among these models, there are those which are reproductions of optical illusions, and others that seem like normal models, but when you add movement to them, they show movement that should be impossible in real life. This is done by using the same trick, and I call them 'impossible motions'." Professor Sugihara's "impossible motions" have been recognized around the world. He won first prize in an international competition last year with this one, called "Magnet-Like Slopes". Sugihara says the success of his illusions is tied to human perception ...

It looks like many other light aircraft, but Elektra One has the power to revolutionize the aviation industry -- according to its German developers PC-Aero. The aircraft is electric -- its batteries, charged by solar cells on the hangar roof, can keep it aloft for hours. It's a clean, inexpensive and renewable source of power and CEO Calin Gologan says it's the future of air travel. [Calin Gologan, PC-Aero]: "The special thing about our plane, well we found out that the preliminary design goals is to fly more than three hours. It can fly up to five hours with a full battery." The aircraft has a range of 400-500 kilometers -- and it's around five times quieter than a normal small aircraft. PC-Aero say the technology could make electric business flights commercially viable. [Calin Gologan, PC-Aero]: "We need only to integrate this technology, electric engines, drivers, batteries in optimum systems and we need an optimum system because batteries weigh quite a lot and we need to compensate this weight by means of a perfect aerodynamic and very light structure." Elektra One made its maiden flight just last month, but already ...

Vice president of the European parliament Edward McMillan Scott has demanded French president Sarkozy to force Eutelsat to restore NTDTV's broadcast into China. [Edward McMillan Scott; Vice-President of European Parliament]: "I believe that it's most important today that Eutelsat is forced to allow NTDTV to go on broadcasting." Invisibility Breakthrough for Japanese Researchers
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt The technology comes from 2003, but it's developers say the Harry Potter-like invisibility cloak is just the beginning. The team, led by Dr. Susumu Tachi, from Keio University, is now adapting their findings to help pilots, drivers, doctors and others. Retro-reflective projection technology uses a computer, a video camera and projector to shine background images onto the front of a subject wearing specialised clothing, creating the illusion of invisibility. What makes the technology unique is a fabric made of glass beads only 50 microns wide, which can reflect light directly back at the source, much like the screen in a cinema. Viewed from near the light source, the projection is bright even in broad daylight, and researchers say the material can be applied to almost anything. In the short term, the team sees usage in car interiors, airplanes and helicopters. They say blind spots could be eliminated and accidents and hard landings avoided by making walls seemingly transparent. The eventual goal though is to create an "augmented reality" that allows anyone to easily see information on real world objects. [Dr. Susumu Tachi, Keio University]: "Looking to the future, instead of glasses, people could wear this and it would act as a navigation system. It could also tell you who someone is, if you meet them around town." In the few years since the technology's ...

NTDTV Satellite Broadcasts to China Shut Off
Uncensored TV Service to China Shut Off Seven weeks away from the Olympics, millions of households in China are no longer receiving the satellite broadcast from the largest independent Chinese-language TV network. New York, June 23 -- On Monday, June 16th, at approximately 6:30 pm US EST time, New Tang Dynasty Television's (NTDTV) satellite broadcast covering Asia suddenly stopped after more than four years on air. Eutelsat Communications, the satellite operator, said that its W5 satellite had experienced "an anomaly to part of its power generator subsystem" and it had "reduced by a small number the operating transponders on the satellite" in collaboration with the satellite's manufacturer, Thales Alenia Space. One week has passed, NTDTV's signal remains dark across Asia, and we still do not know what caused the anomaly, why NTDTV's service was shut off, and when it will be restored. Under normal commercial practice, if a transponder goes down then the satellite company responsible rapidly assures alternative service for its channels. "This is an urgent matter of highest importance to NTDTV and to our viewers who depend on us for uncensored news and information in Mainland China," said Zhong Lee, President of NTDTV. NTDTV has received much support on our audience feedback web site, including these messages from China: "We feel like we cannot breathe the fresh air if we cannot see NTDTV. We feel suffocated when we see the faked news and reports from other [Chinese] TV ...

China's Tuidang Movement Part 3: What the CCP Fears Most
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ me.lt Today, the final installment of our 3-part segment on the Tuidang movement. It's a grassroots Chinese movement that few people in the West even know about--but more than 100 million Chinese people have participated in Tuidang. And it's making China's communist leadership nervous about what that could mean for their future. [Li Fengzhi, Former Intelligence Officer for China's Ministry of State Security]: "Today I stand here, with my back to the embassy that represents China, and solemnly declare that I am severing all ties with the CCP. This is the conclusion I have come to after lengthy and serious consideration, and it is something from the bottom of my heart." Li Fengzhi is a former Chinese intelligence officer. In 2009, he publicly announced his withdrawal from the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP. He's one of millions who've participated in what's called the Tuidang movement. The movement's organizers say there have been more than 100 million participants in total. Unlike most political movements, Tuidang does not call on its participants to donate money or even take specific action—all they ask is that people state their withdrawal from the CCP. The movement's organizers view Tuidang as individuals creating a moral or spiritual separation between themselves and the CCP for their own sake, not for the sake of joining a group or cause. But in a way, Tuidang has become ...

Wealth of Bo Xilai, Gu Kailai's Extended Family Under Scrutiny

The siblings of Bo Xilai—the sacked Chongqing party chief now under investigation for "disciplinary violations"—and his wife Gu Kailai—who faces a murder charge of a British businessman—are reported to be linked to several businesses in China and overseas worth millions of dollars. The family wealth of ousted communist official Bo Xilai has come under media scrutiny, as an official murder investigation continues into the death of British citizen Neil Heywood. Bo's wife is the primary suspect. Reuters has reported that though Heywood was a close friend of the Bo family, they had a falling out. Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, asked Heywood for help with transferring a large sum of money overseas. He reportedly asked her for a larger cut of money. Gu refused, and Heywood threatened to expose her financial dealings. Before Bo Xilai was ousted as Chongqing's Communist Party Chief, he had defended his wife. He called Gu, who was a successful lawyer, nothing more than a housewife. Media reports later revealed she has links to several businesses in China, the UK, and the United States. The couple's son also received an elite education from expensive Western schools. Media reports have also revealed that both Bo and Gu's siblings are connected to successful businesses worth more than one ...

But, the index from the Beijing Environmental Protection Agency (BEPA) remains at 150 to 170—indicating low pollution levels. Residents doubt the Chinese regime's readings. Bears Rescued from Torturous Bile Farm
Chan An animal rights group rescues twenty-eight bears in China. An NGO dedicated to ending animal cruelty in Asia have just released footage of 28 moon bears that were being rescued from a life of torture on bile farms in China. STORY: The animal rights group, Animals Asia Foundation (AAF), say the bears were rescued from a farm in Ziyang, in Sichuan Province. Then they were brought to a rescue center in Chengdu in cramped cages and in shocking condition. Five were already dead. The rights group's founder says the surviving bears were emaciated and wounded in various ways and appeared terrified. Some of the bears were blind... some had shattered teeth and were severely wounded. [Dr. Heather Bacon, AAF Senior Veterinary Nurse]: "We're a little bit worried about the bear here just in front of us. She's basically been lying down in the same position even whilst we've been moving around and off-loading other bears in front of her. She's making a very long groaning noise and she just seems very disinterested in anything that's going on." Bear bile is used in traditional Chinese medicine and the black market trade is thriving. It is believed that more than 7000 bears are imprisoned in the farms across China. The bears are milked daily and kept in tiny metal cages for up to 22 years, before usually dying slowly as a result of chronic infection. In July 2000, AAF signed an agreement with Sichuan authorities to rescue 500 bears in the region and work towards eliminating bear ...

Thailand's Queen Mourns Protester
STORY: Thailand's revered Queen Sirikat arrives at the funeral of one of two protesters killed last week in a tear gas attack by police in Bangkok. Police had also used smoke grenades to try to force thousands of anti-government protesters away from the national parliament. Hundreds were hurt by shrapnel. Some lost limbs. Police say they were not the cause, but forensic tests have shown some of the tear gas canisters used are capable of such damage. Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat has apologized for last week's deadly clashes. In a televised speech to the nation, he also addressed growing calls for his resignation. [Somchai Wongsawat, Prime Minister of Thailand]: "The government is giving support to amend the constitution. The amendment could lead to everyone's acceptance to go forward. If all Thais are ready to accept the change that will benefit them, then I'm ready to step down without any problem." He went on to say he doesn't think leaving the job he's had for just three weeks will solve Thailand's problems. The protesters have virtually paralyzed the government, polarized society, and already seen off one prime minister. But they vow to keep occupying Government House until they get a leader with no links to ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Somchai is a brother-in-law of Thaksin. Protest organizers see the queen's funeral visit as the strongest sign yet that they've got the support of the monarchy.

The endangered bird is an offspring of a North Island Brown Kiwi. A rare white kiwi made its first media appearance on Tuesday, after it hatched at the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre near Wellington on May 1st. The kiwi is a flightless bird native to New Zealand and is the country's national symbol. The small bird has been named 'Manukura' by Maori elders. Manukura is not an albino but a rare offspring of a North Island Brown Kiwi. It's being hand-reared by Department of Conservation officers for four to six months, and is being fed a diet of minced meat and vegetables. According to Birdlife International, the North Island Brown Kiwi is endangered. The current population of 38400 has decreased by as much as 86 percent over the past 36 years, due to predators and loss of habitat.
